Happiest season11/13/2022 ![]() Everything she’s in, she’s just so unique and really stands out. I’ve always admired her so much as an actor. She’s a very collaborative actor, so she brought a lot to Abby and added other dimensions to her that made her feel very real and really empathize with her. We managed to get on the phone one day and had a good conversation, and then I went out to Germany and we met for two days and went through the script, and she came on board. #Happiest season movieI offered the movie to Kristen, and she was in Germany making Charlie’s Angels at the time. Having someone who could play all the different layers of the character while still being able to be funny was really important. She just felt like the perfect person for the role, because she is such an incredible dramatic actress but then she can also turn around and be on SNL and be hilarious. How did those two get involved, and what was it like to work with them? Did they have any involvement in Abby’s and Harper’s characters? The lesbian internet lost its mind when Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis were announced as the leads for this film. There was an opportunity to have some real fun with the comedy there, but then also get into the real seriousness of the coming-out process. I’ve also spent the majority of my Christmases with other people’s families, and that is its own kind of crazy experience-being the odd man out in that situation. I’ve gone home with people and been the friend. That was my original idea: that it would be going home with someone for the holidays and having to pretend to be the friend and not finding out until it was too late. What was your and Mary’s inspiration for making coming out the central conflict of the story? It’s meaningful, too, to have Kristen Stewart in this role because she’s someone who has talked about her own coming-out process in the public eye. One thing I really love about this film is how you treat the coming-out process with such empathy and tenderness-it’s lighthearted but still nuanced. We ultimately ended up with Tristar, because they had the same vision for the movie that I did. We developed it with him a little bit more, and then sent it out to studios and took a bunch of meetings. We sent him the script and he loved it and came on board. When we finished the script, there was a producer who I knew-I had met with him about a different project that didn’t work out, but I really liked him. Was there a sense of “Okay, the world is ready for a lesbian holiday movie now”? Or did you just decide to go for it and see what happened? She hadn’t really written a script before but agreed to work on it with me, and then we went from there. She was so funny and fun, and I decided to ask her if she wanted to write with me. Then I met Mary Holland when we were working on Veep together, and we really got along. I had the idea for this movie and I wrote a little outline for it, and then I got busy and I was working as an actor and it kind of fell away. Happiest Season felt like a great opportunity to tell a universal story from a new perspective.Īfter I finished my first film, The Intervention, I started thinking about what I wanted to do next. If LGBTQ+ characters are there at all, they’re side characters. It’s something that seemed impossible not too long ago, and now here we are! Is this something you had been wanting to do for a long time?Ĭlea DuVall: I’ve always been a big fan of Christmas movies, but I’ve never seen my experience represented in them. We finally have a big studio holiday romance movie with a lesbian couple as the main characters. Glamour: This is an enormous moment for queer women.
